Are you a candidate for dental implants with Midland Family Dental Care of Wyckoff, New Jersey?
Here at Midland Family Dental Care, a good candidate for dental implants would be in overall good dental and physical health, free of gum disease and tooth decay. Otherwise, it may affect the success of the dental implant procedure. A physical examination will be performed to determine whether the patient has adequate jawbone and gum tissue to support the implants. This is so we can ensure that you have a strong foundation to support the implants. If not, then bone grafting or a soft tissue augmentation surgery might need to be performed to ensure a strong foundation before applying an implant. Typically, young patients are not eligible to have a dental implant procedure due to underdevelopment of their teeth and jawbone. However, our doctors will be able to make the final determination as to whether or not you would be an ideal candidate for dental implants.
Bone Grafting and Soft Tissue Augmentation for Dental Implants
As noted above, some patients may not have the jawbone structure or sufficient gum tissue (a result of gum recession) that is needed to support dental implants. If this is the case, then the patient is no longer a candidate for this procedure. If this is you, don’t fret. We have other means of preparing you for your dental implant procedure. Bone grafting or a soft tissue augmentation may be the first step to ensure a established foundation to prepare you for dental implants.
When a patient does not have enough gum tissue to support the implants, a small oral surgery may be performed to take soft tissue from the roof of the mouth (palate) to build up gums that have recessed over time. This process is known as soft tissue augmentation.
If the patient’s jawbone is not adequate enough for dental implants, bone grafting may be performed. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which bone is taken from another part of the patient’s body (the hip is a common donor), then it is surgically grafted to the jawbone. Sometimes, synthetic bone may be used. This procedure is typically performed a few months before dental implants to make sure that the jawbone has fully healed and is able to take dental implants.
